General Maintenance Tips for all Chains

For long lasting jewellery chains with an exceptional shine, we suggest some general maintenance techniques and methods regardless of the metal type and plating.

Cleaning

Firstly, regular cleaning is the go with all types of jewellery chains. A soft cloth will be your best friend when it comes to ensuring that your chains look spotless. For an in-depth clean, we suggest soaking your chains in a solution of warm water and mild soap. Use a clean toothbrush with soft bristles to carefully scrub off any dirt that gets trapped between the links. When cleaning, always opt for mild soap solutions. Post soaking your chains in the solution, dry off the chain with a soft cloth.

Storage

In general, we suggest storing your chains separately from other jewellery to prevent tangling and scratching. Use individual pouches or compartments to store your chains if you can. When you are not wearing your chain, try and store it in a dry place to prevent tarnishing. This is specifically applicable to silver and gold chains.

Handling

Handle your chains with care to avoid bends, dents and kinks. Avoid pulling or tugging on them, as this can weaken the links. Remove your jewellery chains before engaging in activities that may impact the quality of your jewellery. This includes sports, swimming, cleaning and sleeping. We also suggest keeping your chains away from harsh chemicals that may tarnish the metal, including perfumes, lotions and cleaning agents.

Inspection

All jewellery can benefit from an inspection or two. Professional maintenance every few years allows the jewellery professionals to spot flaws that you might not have noticed. But with this being said, it’s still good to keep an eye out for any signs of wear and tear, especially with the clasps and links of your chains.

Silver Chains

Silver chains are one of the most popular metals of chains. They offer a timeless metallic shine that you simply can’t find in any other metal. However, sadly, silver chains in particular can be prone to tarnishing over time. If your silver chain does tarnish, we have you covered. All you need to do is make a paste with baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the chain, gently rub with a soft cloth, rinse the chain thoroughly so there’s no paste on there, and dry. To prevent future tarnishing, consider investing in an anti-tarnish bag to store your silver chain. But, of course, make sure to put one chain in each bag to prevent tangling.

Gold Chains

Gold chains require specific maintenance depending on their plating. For instance, solid gold chains require less care than gold plated chains. If you’re unsure about what this all means, don’t worry because we’ll take you step by step with specific maintenance advice!

Gold Filled Chains

A gold filled chain is a type of chain that consists of an alloy base metal, typically brass, copper or silver, covered with a thick layer of solid yellow of rose gold chains. The thick layering of gold makes this type of gold chain easier to maintain. Gentle cleaning is still required, as abrasive cleaners or brushes can damage the gold layer. Alternatively, invest in a cloth specifically designed for gold filled jewellery. These types of jewellery chains are prone to discolouration if not treated correctly, so keep your gold filled chain away from harsh chemicals.

Solid Gold Chains

A solid gold chain is almost entirely crafted with pure gold, making it highly durable and easier to maintain. Invest in a gold polishing cloth for a brilliant shine and follow the product instructions carefully. A solid gold chain will still contain other metals, so it’s best to keep a lookout for any signs of tarnishing.

Gold Plated Chains

Gold plated chains are similar to gold filled chains, except instead of being covered in a thick layer of gold, the outer layer is rather thin. Because of this, gold plated chains require the most care as the gold layering is more susceptible to coming off. Follow the instructions of the gold filled chains, but make sure to apply gentler cleaning techniques by investing in softer brushes and mild cleaning solutions.

Titanium Chains

Titanium chains are known for their strength, lightweight feel and resistance to corrosion. Don’t be fooled by its reputation for its resistance, because titanium chains still require some maintenance. If your titanium chain gets scratches, there’s actually a trick to remove the scratches! Grab a nylon pad or a cream metal polish, and rub it on with a soft cloth. Make sure to rinse the titanium chain with water once you’re done, and it should go back to looking brand new.

Stainless Steel Chains

For the stainless steel chain owners out there, you can take good care of your stainless steel chain by using specialised stainless steel cleaners or a paste of baking soda and warm water for cleaning. You’ll be glad to know that stainless steel chains do not tarnish or corrode easily. With this being said, the chain is still prone to scratches. If your stainless steel chain does get scratched, take it to a professional jewellery cleaner who can have the scratch polished away.
