1. Nicole Kidman - 2000 Oscars
Attending the 92nd Oscars of 2000 in support of her then-husband, Tom Cruise who was nominated at the time. Australia’s own, Nicole Kidman gave the coveted gold statuette are run for its money in a shimmering asymmetrical chiffon gown designed by John Galiano of Christian Dior. Ever the fashion risk-taker, Nicole rocked the backless, flapper-inspired number with matching gold accessories including strappy gold heels and a thin metal headband placed in her messy updo.
But what really made Oscar-winner Nicole’s Dior gown pop was the jewellery she fashioned with it. Opting for gold jewellery to match her dress, of course, the actress rocked gold mesh-style bracelets that laced through her fingers like a glove. Allegedly a gift from Cruise who purchased the bracelets in Italy, the glove-style bracelets were a perfect way to complement the flapper aesthetic that the actress had going on. Nicole topped off the look with gold hoop earrings adorned with dainty pearls from her own jewellery collection.

2. Anne Hathaway - 2013 Oscars
The ethereal actress and fashion icon, Anne Hathaway, didn’t just show up to the 2013 Oscars destined to take home the award for Best Supporting Actress, she also showed up to make a statement. Rocking a chiffon halter gown designed by Prada in a soft pink hue that flawlessly complemented her porcelain skin. Anne’s look was allegedly a last-minute switch to avoid clashing with a costar who was slated to attend in a lace gown similar to her original gown.
Despite this near-fashion mishap, Anne’s last-minute switcheroo definitely paid off-especially accessories-wise. Complimenting her elegant recently-chopped pixie cut hair with a classic pair of white gold or platinum diamond stud earrings Anne’s jewellery is very timeless, much like a slick halter gown. Along with the earrings, The Devil Wears Prada star also wore an incredibly intricate choker-style necklace and two cluster-style diamond bracelets all designed by Tiffany & Co.

3. Margot Robbie - 2016 Oscars
With her tremendous natural beauty and down-to-earth persona, Australian actress, Margot Robbie never misses the mark on the red carpet, and the 2016 Oscars were certainly no exception. Paring her long blonde locks with a gold, snakeskin-style gown featuring a daring neckline by Tom Ford, you would be forgiven if you mistook Margot for an Oscar statuette. The star stunned in her long-sleeve gown which was already so that it didn’t require too many accessories, something Margot clearly understood.
Rather than opting for yellow gold which would likely get lost in her dress, the two-time Oscar nominee went for minimalistic white gold jewellery that really popped with her gown. Choosing to forgo necklaces in order to compliment her plunging neckline, Margot wore a simple pave-style pair of diamond hoop earrings and a single band-style diamond ring. Overall, Margot’s jewellery was simple yet elegant.
4. Angelina Jolie - 2009 Oscars
Rarely do celebrities rock an LBD little black dress on the red carpet, often choosing one-a-kind styles that are incredibly elaborate in their design. However, while attending the 81st Oscars back in 2009, Angelina Jolie reminded us that the LBD will always be a timeless and sophisticated choice when it comes to awards season fashion. Walking arm in arm with her then-partner and fellow nominee of the night, Brat Pitt (RIP Bradgelina), Angie was a vision in her mermaid-style Elie Saab Couture gown.
With her hair slicked back and pinned in a half-up-half-down style, the real statement was her enchanting drop earrings set with ginormous pear-shaped emeralds. Designed by jeweller-to-the stars, Lorraine Schwartz, the actress' emerald earrings provide the perfect pop of colour to the all-black ensemble-as did the emerald and diamond ring that she paired it with. Although very simple, Angelina’s classic look paired with rich gemstones is referenced often on the ‘best of’ lists pertaining to Oscars fashion.

5. Jennifer Lawrence - 2013 Oscars
The belle of the ball at the 85th Oscars in 2013 was undoubtedly Best Actress winner, Jennifer Lawrence. Arriving in a billowy peach-coloured strapless ballgown designed by Christian Dior. The dress was so puffy and diaphanous that it was difficult to walk in, which meant it was not at all surprising when JLaw tripped on the stairs while accepting her award for Silver Linings Playbook. The four-time Oscar nominee and one-time winner kept her jewellery very minimal, obviously not wanting to take too much attention away from her stunning Dior ballgown.
Rocking a tidy slicked bun, Jennifer opted for a pair of large diamond drop earrings designed by Chopard for the occasion. Arranged in a large cluster-style setting, the actress’ 12-carat diamond earrings resembled two baubles, especially with their unique sleeper-style clasp. To accentuate her incredible gown, the star opted for a dainty diamond chain featuring a fine row of brilliant round cut stones. Instead of layering the necklace, the star made the crafty decision to wear the necklace backwards so it sat down her back. This style risk paid off, as many were eager to replicate this look for their next function.

6. Lady Gaga - 2019 Oscars
Forever known for her quirky sense of fashion and her epic red-carpet appearances, the multi-hyphenate singer, Lady Gaga knows how to make an entrance. Whether she’s showing up being carried by her backup dancers in a giant egg or wearing gowns made entirely out of raw meat, everyone looks forward to seeing how the star will top her last red carpet appearance. So, when she showed up to the 2019 Oscars nominated for Best Actress and Best Original Song, saying our jaws collectively dropped is an understatement. Arriving in a black corsetted Alexander McQueen number with a matching pair of black leather gloves, Gaga’s look was a bit more understated than many of her usual get-ups.
Sure, it was incredibly glamorous, but it also showed there was some separation between Gaga the multi-platinum recording artist and Gaga-the actress. However, there were still sprinkles of classic Lady Gaga in there, particularly in the accessories. Fashioned around her neck was an epic 287-carat, yes 287, diamond pendant. Flanked by a series of brilliant round-cut diamonds, the Tiffany piece features a massive 128-carat yellow cushion-cut diamond that was found in South Africa’s Kimberly Mine and sold to the brand back in 1877. Reportedly worth $30 million, the necklace has only been worn three times. Once by Audrey Hepburn in promotion shots for Breakfast At Tiffany’s, then by Gaga and only recently by Beyonce in an advertising campaign for the brand. The singer complemented the heavy pendant with a matching pair of yellow and white diamond drop earrings.

7. Emma Stone - 2017 Oscars
Nominated for her transcending performance in Damien Chazelle’s musical, La La Land, actress Emma Stone showed up to the 2017 Oscars looking like a 1920s movie siren. With her signature, red locks styled into tousled, soft old Hollywood-style waves, Emma rocked a stunning gold flapper style gown-clearly the inspiration from her onscreen persona for this look. Designed by the French fashion house, Givenchy, the a-line gown was heavily detailed with gold embroidery and beading.
Topped off with gold fringing at the bottom, Emma’s look was the epitome of a movie star all the way down to the glamorous accessories. Opting for a pair of yellow gold and diamond threader earrings or drop earrings to subtly accentuate the fringe in the dress as well as a dainty diamond trilogy ring. Emma’s simple yet elegant jewellery may have not been the most extravagant look of the night, but it blended seamlessly with the extensive beadwork of her dress. They also very much fit the part she was playing on the red carpet, which was a classic movie star and Oscar winner.

8. Julia Roberts 2001 Oscars
America’s Sweetheart, Julia Roberts was a favourite to win Best Actress for her role in Erin Brockovich at the Oscars way back in 2001. And you can tell that the actress came dressed to win for the occasion…which she did! Julia stunned us all when she went up to accept her gold statuette, rocking a vintage monochrome Valentino halter dress, affectionately nicknamed the ‘skunk dress’ by the media at the time. Although it was very simplistic for Oscars fashion at the time, it is not at all surprising that Julia’s outfit remains timeless over twenty years later.
Inspiring many celebrities to down the sustainable route by choosing a vintage gown, the impact of Julia’s black and white dress remains to this day (it even has its own Wikipedia page after all), as do the wonderful accessories that she paired with it. Not wanting to distract from her incredible vintage ensemble, the Oscar winner went very minimal and classic with her jewellery. Sporting a bouffant upstyle, Julia accessorised with small hook-style diamond drop earrings with two round cut diamonds suspended on either side. For her arm candy, Julia was loaned a 22-carat diamond platinum cuff bracelet known as the ‘snowflake’ bracelet by Van Cleef Arpels. The diamond bangle has since been sold at auction, where it was purchased for $91,000 (over $137,000 Australian dollars) by Mariah Carey’s boyfriend at the time to give it to her.

9. Gwyneth Paltrow - 1999 Oscars
Actress and healthy living champion, Gwenyth Paltrow was the definition of ‘pretty in pink’ attending the 1999 Oscars where she took home the Best Actress trophy for Shakespeare In Love. Rocking a bubblegum pink taffeta gown designed by Ralph Lauren, the Oscar winner looked like a real-life princess playing into several 90s trends with her v-neck line and spaghetti straps. Her shiny blonde hair was also fashioned into a slicked-back bun with a middle part that was also very on par with trends from the late 1990s and early 72k era.
To compensate for the elegant simplicity of her pink-hued gown, Gwenthyth really brought the whole look together with her jaw-dropping accessories. Adorning a pink chiffon shawl around her arms for the red carpet, the actress was well-frosted with a pair of diamond stud earrings, a diamond necklace and diamond bracelets. Opting for dainty flower earrings arranged in a cluster and a matching bracelet with pink diamonds arranged in a flower pattern, the real statement-maker was the tasselled diamond princess necklace. A whopping 40 carats and adorned with oval and pear-cut stones, the actress chose to wear the platinum piece at a shorter length. Putting a contemporary twist on it and making it appear more like a choker than a traditional diamond necklace.

10. Halle Berry - 2002 Oscars
Former Bond girl, Halle Berry made history at the 2002 Oscars when she became the first African American woman in history to take home the gong for Best Actress. Winning for her role in Monster’s Ball, Halle’s Oscars outfit is often credited as one of the best. Not only for its significance but also for its gracefulness. Designed by Elie Saab, Halle’s maroon gown with a sheer bodice and floral embroidery was an early interpretation of the naked dress we see so many stars emulate on the red carpet today. Complete with a long taffeta train, the dress was seamlessly paired with her accessories courtesy of Harry Winston. Choosing a pair of red diamond or ruby earrings that were arranged in a flower pattern to match the red hue and floral detailing in her dress, the actress’ were modern and wonderfully coordinated.
In addition to the gemstone earrings, Halle also opted for a matching flower bracelet with the same ruby or diamond and floral detailing. Her standout piece, however, was the 5-54-carat coloured diamond ring that she wore on her pinky finger. Flanked by two white tapered diamonds on either side, the ring features an ultra-rare dark orange diamond conveniently named the ‘pumpkin diamond’. Purchased by Harry Winston in 1997 for $1.3 million ($1.9 million Australian dollars), the diamond has been cut into a cushion shape and is now said to be worth over $3 million ($4.5 million Australian dollars). Three years after Halle’s historic win, the stone was removed from its setting and featured in the Smithsonian Museum’s The Splendor of Diamonds exhibit that showcased some of the world’s rarest and most valuable gemstones.

11. Charlize Theron - 2019 Oscars
By the time Charlize Theron was attending the 2019 Oscars, she was already an award’s season veteran. Having taken home the Best Actress playing a real-life serial killer in the movie, Moster over a decade earlier, Charlize was an Oscars fashion pro. This was evident in the way she confidently sauntered across the red carpet, debuting a new dark brown hairdo and a radiant baby-blue Dior look. Featuring long sleeves and a mock neckline, what really made Charlize’s dress exciting was the unexpected open back and the radiant jewels that she paired with the modernist luxe number. Wearing over 360 carats of diamonds and gemstones courtesy of Bvlgari, the star really turned the glamour up a notch for the 91st Academy Awards.
Drawing attention to the high neckline and broad shoulders of her pastel gown, the Dior ambassador went with an epic 79.83-carat serpent-style platinum diamond necklace. Adorned with brilliant round-cut diamonds, the daring chain piece is from the brand’s heritage collection. Layered underneath the serpent piece was a thick tennis-style necklace featuring 60 large brilliant round-cut diamonds. She completed the look with diamond bracelets, including a serpent-style one that mirrored the one around her neck, several large dress rings and a pair of emerald-cut sapphire earrings.

12. Keira Knightley - 2006 Oscars
British actress, Keira Knightley is no stranger to over-the-top ballgowns, often sporting them in period films that she has become so famous for. So, when attending the 2006 Oscars where she was nominated for her role in Pride and Prejudice, it would’ve been like another day at the office. The Chanel ambassador, however, switched out her usual bejewelled corsetted gowns for a slick plum-coloured taffeta gown. Designed by wedding dress and bridal jewellery designer, Vera Wang, Keira’s gown had a classic silhouette with a fishtail train and a one-shoulder bodice. But it is the gemstone jewellery that accompanied the gown that really got people talking.
Famously proclaiming, “what’s the point of being subtle at the Oscars?” Keira’s jewels helped solidify the Pirates of the Caribbean actress as a style icon. Bringing a touch of retro to her look, Keira picked out a magnificent bib-style necklace from the 1960s. Decorated with a cabochon sapphire, emerald, ruby and of course diamonds, Keira’s necklace played into the red jewel tone hue featured in her dress. Arguably, one of the most iconic pieces ever worn, the actress fashioned the extraordinary piece with a large cocktail-style diamond and emerald ring and a dainty pair of gold pearl earrings.
