Gemstones have been worn and used as decoration since ancient times. From the turquoise beads of the ancient Egyptians to the emerald rings of European royalty, precious stones have been worn and given as expressions of wealth, power, love and friendship throughout the history of mankind. Each month of the year corresponds with a gemstone and these birthstones are still worn and given as gifts to this day.

The birthstone for January is Garnet. Depending on whether you're born in the first half of the month or the second, this is also the birthstone for Capricorns and Aquarians. 

The birthstone for February is Amethyst. This violet gemstone is a variety of quartz. It's the Aquarius birthstone for those born February 1-19 and the Pisces birthstone for anyone born in February from then onwards.

There are multiple birthstones for March, namely Bloodstone and Aquamarine. The word aquamarine comes from the Latin words aqua and marine meaning seawater, which is reflected in its watery blue colour.

The birthstone for April is Diamond, the most sought-after of all the gemstones. Usually clear white in colour, diamonds can also be found in a variety of colours, including pink, yellow and black.

The birthstones for May are Emerald and Agate. Emeralds are highly precious green gemstones, often considered to be the gemstone of royalty due to their rarity. This stone makes a stunning addition to a classic engagement ring.

The birthstone for June is Pearl. Pearls aren't technically stones, but hard spherical objects produced within the soft tissue of a mollusc or other animal. Made of calcium carbonate, pearls make beautiful earrings.

The birthstones for July are Onyx and Ruby. Onyx is usually a striking black colour, while ruby comes in many shades of red, making these some of the most glamorous gemstones for rings and other jewellery.

The birthstones for August are Carnelian or Peridot. Peridot is a yellowish-green gemstone symbolising positive energy. Its green colour varies depending on the iron content of the gem.

The birthstone for September is Chrysolite or Sapphire. Sapphires are probably best known as royal blue gemstones, however, they can also be found in a range of colours from pink and orange to purple and even black.

The birthstone for October is Opal. Precious opal is an iridescent layer of mineraloid found in the fissures of rocks like sandstone and basalt. It is also the national gemstone of Australia.

The birthstones for November are Topaz and Citrine. Citrine is yellowish-brown and therefore looks similar to its more valuable cousin, Topaz. Topaz is said to be a symbol of happiness, friendship and hope. 

The birthstones for December are Tanzanite, Turquoise and Topaz. Turquoise has a long history, with turquoise beads dating back as far as 5000 BC. It is considered to be a love charm, stimulating romantic love. Available in a wide variety of colours, you're sure to fall in love with topaz. Tanzanite is certainly just as beautiful as the other December birthstones. It offers the most impressive deep ocean blue.
